چکیده

Introduction Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a chronic, prevalent, and highly impairing psychiatric illness. While its aetiology remains unknown, several infectious agents have been associated to obsessive-compulsive symptoms, including herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV-1) Toxoplasma gondii. Objectives To evaluate the serostatus for HSV-1 gondii in sample of patients with OCD, as well clinical brain imaging correlates. Methods Twenty-six OCD 30 healthy controls recruited Lisbon were assessed sociodemographic characteristics using Yale-Brown Obsessive-Compulsive Scale-II (YBOCS-II) Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II). Seropositivity was serum ELISA, volumes cortical subcortical structures T1-weighted magnetic resonance imaging. Results YBOCS-II BDI-II scores significantly higher patients, while age, sex, smoking status, seropositivity similar between two groups. Among those seropositive had lower total white-matter, grey-matter, left right putamen, controls, only last smaller. In multiple regression analyses control associations conserved, effect age not significant. No significant differences found according Conclusions Our preliminary results suggest that smaller white- grey-matter brain. Disclosure relationships.

Brain imaging in pediatric obsessive-compulsive disorder.

OBJECTIVE To review progress in understanding pediatric obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). The focus is on the frontal-striatal-thalamic model of OCD, neurobiological and genetic studies of the disorder, and their influence on recent advances in treatment. METHOD Computerized literature searches were conducted with the key words "obsessive-compulsive disorder" in conjunction with "pediatric...

Symmetry symptoms in obsessive-compulsive disorder: clinical and genetic correlates.

OBJECTIVE In obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), symmetry-related symptoms may be important. Although clinical correlates of symmetry-related symptoms have been identified in OCD, few data exist on genetic associations. Animal studies indicate involvement of dopamine in symmetry-related behavior, suggesting this may be relevant to analogous symptoms in OCD. Alterations in dopamine may also ref...

Brain structural correlates of depressive comorbidity in obsessive-compulsive disorder

The high comorbidity of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) with major depressive disorder (MDD) suggests common neurobiological substrates. We assessed the contribution of lifetime MDD to brain structural alterations in OCD using magnetic resonance imaging. OCD patients with (n=33) or without (n=39) lifetime MDD, and 72 control subjects were assessed. Comparative region of interest (ROI) analy...

Obsessive-compulsive disorder associated with brain lesions: clinical phenomenology, cognitive function, and anatomic correlates.

We studied the behavioral, cognitive, and neuroimaging characteristics of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) in 13 patients with focal brain lesions (acquired OCD) and compared their clinical features and the severity of obsessive and compulsive (OC) symptoms with patients with idiopathic OCD. Both OCD groups were further compared with matched normal controls on a series of neuropsychological ...

Subtyping Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder: Neuropsychological Correlates

We administered neuropsychological measures considered sensitive to prefrontal dysfunction (both orbitofrontal and dorsolateral prefrontal neocortex) to obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) patients and control subjects. OCD subjects exhibited performance deficits, in comparison to community controls, on three measures sensitive to orbitofrontal neocortex dysfunction. Contrary to expectation, OC...
